Don Wilson Jones, 72, died suddenly on June 16, 2013 after collapsing on his land that he loved near Liberty Hill, Texas. Don was born at home on January 3, 1941, in Corpus Christi, Texas to Ina Lou Brown and Woodrow Wilson Jones. He is predeceased by his parents, and sister Sally Tyler of Dale, Texas. He is survived by his sister Joelynn Windebank of Harriman, Tennessee, his significant other Martha Elvey of Cedar Park and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by half-siblings Penny Mask of Duncanville, Texas, Gerald Jones of San Antonio, Texas, and Kathie Loeffelholz of Nebraska; and Martha’s daughters Laura (&Shelby) Womack and Sara (&Terry) Heath and their nine children.
Don graduated as Valedictorian of the class of 1959 from the Buckner Children’s Home in Dallas, which he attended after the early death of his mother. He worked his way through The University of Texas (UT) at Austin and earned a BA degree in English. He served in the Marine Reserves. He began working at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) of UT as a student and retired after 40 years in 2001. He worked as a computer programmer for the ARL’s Administrative Office at the end of his career. Don enjoyed outdoor activities of all kinds, especially canoeing, watching birds, photographing animals on his land, and target shooting. He was an avid reader, and never stopped learning, especially science and Texas history. He was also a skilled carpenter and craftsman; he single-handedly built two story buildings, and made many custom wooden gifts.
